What Is a Monthly Profection? A Plain English Guide

If annual profections are new to you, start there first. This post picks up right where that one leaves off.

You already know your birthday brings a new house forward every year. What a lot of people do not realize is that the same counting keeps going underneath the surface, at the scale of a single month. People call this a monthly profection, a profection month, or sometimes just a smaller profection. All three point to the same idea.

The basic idea

Your annual profection house does not sit still for the whole year. It is more like the chapter title. The months inside that chapter each get their own line.

Starting the month you turn a new age, the house that is active for your year becomes month one. The next month forward is the next house in line. The month after that, the next one again. By the time twelve months have passed and your next birthday arrives, the count has moved through all twelve houses and lands right back where the new annual year begins.

Say your 7th house is active for the year. Your first month is a 7th house month. The next is 8th house. Then 9th, and onward, one house at a time, until the cycle closes and a new annual year opens the count again from wherever that year’s house happens to be.

Counting from your birthday, not the calendar

This is the part that trips people up. Profection months do not follow January through December. They follow your birthday.

If your birthday falls in April, your first profection month of the year runs from that April date to roughly the same date in May. Not from the first of the month. The count is anchored entirely to you.

Where the time lord comes in

Each month works exactly like the annual year does, just smaller. The house that is active has a sign sitting on it, and that sign has a ruling planet. That planet becomes your time lord for the month, the same way a planet becomes your time lord for the whole year.

A year can have one steady time lord while the month underneath it hands the baton to a completely different planet for four weeks. Both are true at once. The year sets the wider theme. The month brings a nearer, more specific texture to how that theme actually shows up.

Weather inside a season

Think of the annual house as the season you are in. Warm and expansive, or quiet and internal, whatever that year’s house tends to bring. The monthly house is the weather inside that season. Some weeks it rains even in summer. The season has not changed. Something closer to the ground has.
