The Wheel
You were born. The wheel begins to turn.
Eighty four years. Seven turns. All the way down.
The 1st house
The self. You arrive with a body and a name and no idea yet who you are. The whole wheel starts here, with the simple fact of you. It always will.
The 2nd house
What sustains you. A one year old learns the word mine and means it. This is the territory of what is yours and what holds you up.
The 3rd house
Words. A two year old is drunk on language, naming everything in reach. This house holds the near world and the daily back and forth with the people close by.
The 4th house
Home. The place you come from, long before you have any say in it. Roots grow down here. Everything later grows up from them.
The 5th house
Play. A four year old does this without being taught. Making things for the joy of making them. This house carries that flame through the rest of your life.
The 6th house
The daily round. Mornings, meals, the small repeated acts that keep a body running. Nothing here is glamorous. Nearly everything here is load bearing.
The 7th house
The other. At six you learn the word friend means something real. This is the territory of the person across from you. Every significant bond in your life lives here, and each one is a mirror.
The 8th house
The deep end. Loss lives here, and so does everything loss makes room for. This house is hard to talk about and harder to skip. The wheel passes through it on every turn. So does a life.
The 9th house
The far horizon. Somewhere around this age the world turns out to be bigger than your street. That discovery lives here. Travel does too, and the long search for what it all means.
The 10th house
The mountaintop. What you build in the world and what the world sees when it looks at you. At nine it is a dream of what you want to be. The dream keeps changing. The house keeps asking.
The 11th house
Your people. The wider circle that catches you. This is the territory of community, and of the hopes too big to carry alone.
The 12th house
The room at the end of the hall. Solitude, sleep, the parts of a year that happen below the waterline. Some years ask you to do less and feel more. This is where they live. Rest counts as work here.
Age 12. Look.
You are back where you began. The 1st house again, the house of self, one full turn of the wheel behind you.
This is the whole secret of the system. Life moves in circles of twelve, and every year revisits ground you have walked before.
People have watched their lives this way for two thousand years.
From here, the wheel turns faster. So do the years. You may have noticed they already do.
How old are you?
The wheel can show you where you stand. Or keep scrolling and find your year on foot.
Age 16
Most of a life happens in years like this one. Unwritten here, full out there. The wheel keeps count either way.
Age 24
Two turns of the wheel. Jupiter returns to where it began, and the world tends to feel wider for it.
Age 29 · 30
Ages 29 and 30. Saturn returns for the first time, and the wheel hands you the 7th house. Commitment, weighed in both hands. Most people feel this one.
Age 42
Uranus reaches the far side of its long circle, and a restlessness with your own routines tends to arrive with it. The 7th house lands here too. The people closest to you feel the weather first.
