Where This Comes From

Annual profections are not new. The technique comes from Hellenistic astrology, the tradition that flourished in the centuries around the turn of the millennium, drawing together Babylonian, Egyptian, and Greek ideas about the sky. One of the most detailed surviving sources on profections is the Anthologies, written by the astrologer Vettius Valens in the second century. Much of what this site describes traces back to that tradition.

The planetary rulerships used throughout this site, the ones that determine your time lord, follow the traditional system. Each zodiac sign is ruled by one of the seven classical planets, the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. This is the rulership scheme used in Hellenistic and medieval astrology, before Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were discovered and folded into more modern systems. Profections were built around these seven planets, so this site keeps that frame intact.

The meanings attached to each house, identity, resources, communication, home, and the rest, are also part of this older tradition, carried and refined for centuries. The underlying structure is traditional. The words around it here are this site's own attempt to say those old ideas in plain language, without the jargon that usually comes with them.

Astrology is a wide field with many schools of thought, and profections are one piece of it. This site focuses on that one piece, kept simple on purpose.
