How your houses get their signs

Your rising sign, also called your ascendant, is the sign that was crossing the eastern horizon the moment you were born. Whatever sign that is becomes the sign of your first house.

From there, the next sign in the zodiac becomes your second house. The one after that becomes your third. The pattern keeps going, in the same order the signs always run, all the way around until the sign just before your rising sign closes out your twelfth house.

Say your rising sign is Leo. Your first house is Leo. Your second is Virgo. Your third is Libra. By the time you reach your seventh house, you land on Aquarius, the sign directly across the wheel from where you started. Your twelfth house, the last stop before the cycle closes, is Cancer.

Change the rising sign and the whole arrangement shifts with it. A Capricorn rising starts that same sequence in a different place, so a Capricorn rising person’s seventh house falls in Cancer instead.

Why that sequence matters here
